Delbert Lee Cox

Longtime Piggott businessman Delbert Lee Cox, 89, died Saturday, February 15, 2003, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett, MO.

 

He and his brothers, Dorris, Randall and Doyle, started Cox Planing Mill and Lumber Company in Piggott in 1948. Overseeing construction of many houses, churches and schools in the area, Mr. Cox continued to take an active part in the business until his death.

 

He was a gentle, respected, honest, hard-working and trusted member of the business community. He will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.

 

Mr. Cox was born March 10, 1913, near Greenway, AR, the son of the late William Orley and Alda Beatrice Henager Cox.

 

He married Bertha Mae Neeley on June 19, 1935. To this union six children were born.

 

Mr. Cox was of the General Baptist faith, attending Hopewell General Baptist Church of Greenway and the First General Baptist Church of Piggott.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Mae; one son, Donald Edward Cox; one granddaughter, Melissa Jane Parks; one grandson, Donald Steven Cox; and two brothers, Doyle Cox and Randall Cox.

 

He is survived by five children, Steve Cox, Betty Parks and Jeanie Myers, all of Piggott, Barbara Welsh of Phoenix, AZ, and Geraldine Aida of Mesa, AZ; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Dorris Cox of Piggott; two sisters, Neva Bradford of Piggott and Genevieve Hill of Greenway; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Dorris Edward Cox

 

Dorris Edward Cox, co-founder of Cox Planing Mill and Lumber Company, died February 10, 2004 in the Piggott Community Hospital.
 
He and three brothers formed a partnership to begin the lumber, company in 1948, with Dorris managing the planing mill. After the death of his brother Doyle Cox, he became president until he retired.
 
Cox was active in civic affairs, serving as city alderman for two terms and on the Piggott Parks and Playground committee when "A Face in the Crowd" was filmed. He was also a member of the Li­ons Club for 33 years, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and president of the band boosters club in 1965 when the Piggott band marched in the Cotton Bowl Parade. He was a past president of the Piggott chapter of Gideon International and a member of the library board when the new library was built. He was instrumental in organizing the Jackson Street Mission Church that became Emmanuel Baptist Church.
 
Cox was a member of the First Baptist Church in Piggott since 1948. He was elected a deacon in 1952 and served in many other capacities in the church including teacher in the television ministry, training union director leader and teacher for boys programs and served on numerous committees.
 
Cox entered the U.S. Army on April 4, 1941, in Evansville, IN and served until his discharge as a staff sergeant on October 12, 1945 He was on the U.S. President Johnson Liberty Ship in the Pacific Ocean when Pearl Harbor was attacked and was in the initial invasion in the Philippines at Layte and at Okinawa.
 
Cox, 85, was born May 1, 1918, near Greenway, son of the late William Orley and Aida Henager Cox. He had been a resident of General Baptist Nursing Home for the past six years.
 
He was united in marriage to Camilla Bricker on May 1, 1946, in Piggott and to this union three children were born.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Doyle, Delbert and Randall Cox.
 
He is survived by his wife, Camilla Cox; three children, Alan D. Cox and wife, Bonnie, of Benton, LA, Judy Catherine Phillips and husband, Michael, of Dardanelle, AR, and Carol Ann Cox of Piggott; two grandchil­dren, Larissa and Kevin Cox of Fayetteville; two sisters, Neva Bradford of the General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell and Genevieve Hill and husband, Hardin, of Greenway; a sister-in­-law, Rilla Cox of Campbell; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Floyd Donald Cox

 

Floyd Donald Cox, 60, of Winfield, MO, died Sunday,  May 31, 1998, at Lincoln County Memorial Hospital in Troy, MO.
 
He was born December 15, 1937, in Pop­lar Bluff, MO, the son of Floyd and Edith Wood Cox.
 
He was united in marriage to Marilyn Lee Payne on April 7, 1973, in St. Ann, MO, and they made their home near Winfield, MO, for the past 20 years.
 
He was a 1956 graduate of Poplar Bluff High School. He served in the National Guard from June 6, 1956, until September 4, 1957, and served in the U.S. Navy from September 4, 1957, until June 6, 1962.
 
He was employed for a number of years as a machinist at McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing), where he was a member of the Machinist Union, Local 837, in St. Louis, MO. He re­tired in May 1997.
 
He was a member of the O'Fallon Church of Christ in O'Fallon, MO.
 
His father, Floyd Cox, and one son, Donald Gregory Cox, preceded him in death.
 
Survivors include his loving wife of 25 years, Marilyn Cox of Winfield, MO; one son, Steven D. Cox of Co­lumbia, MO; three daughters, Cheryl Helfrich of Troy, IL, Susan Whisenat and husband, Phil, of Irving, TX, and Laura Schroeder of Moscow Mills, MO; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Edith Cox of Poplar Bluff; three sis­ters, Wilma Jean Moyer and husband, Floyd "Bud," of Fenton, MO, Rita Boyd and husband, Don, of Kenya, Africa, and Sondra Whitmer and husband, Lloyd of Poplar Bluff; several nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Grace Mae Scott Rowland Cox

 

Grace Mae Rowland Cox, 98, of Piggott died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Piggott Community Hospital.
 
She was born November 13, 1903, in Pocahontas, AR, the daughter of the late Joseph and Ellen Banning Scott.
 
She married Charles Lester Rowland on July 30, 1922; to this union eight children were born. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1962.
 
She married Gus Cox on October 31, 1977. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1993.
 
She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Fred Scott, Frank Scott, Lester Scott, Walter Scott and Virgil Scott; four sis­ters, Betty Scott, Bell Scott, Jennie Hulse and Hazel Stringer; two sons-in-law, Dennis Westerfield and Edgar Burress; and one daughter-in-law, Mildred Headrick Rowland.
 
She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
 
She is survived by eight chil­dren, Lois Baker and husband, Edgar, and Shirley Culver and husband, Loy, all of Piggott, Charles Lester Rowland Jr. of Plymouth, MI., Clara Burress of Piggott, Billy Joe Rowland and wife, Dorothy, of Florissant, MO, Grace Westerfield of Dublin, GA, Norma Gilmore of Corning, AR,  and Jimmy Rowland and wife, Karen, of Pantoon Beach, IL; 23 grand­children; 43 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
 
Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in poplar Bluff, MO.

Irene Benson Cox

Irene Cox, 88, of Campbell, MO,  died Sunday, December 15, 2002, at the Piggott Community Hospital.
 
She was born June 26, 1914, in St. Francis, AR,  the daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison and Ethel McFarlin Benson.
 
She was married to Paul Cox on December 22, 1933, in Piggott. He preceded her in death on September 25, 1972. She later married Curtis Bevill on Dec. 16, 1986. He preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 1994.
 
She was also preceded in death by her twin sister, Lorene Parrent; sister, Betty Karnes; and brother, Esco Benson.
 
She was a member of the Whitaker General Baptist Church in Campbell.
 
She is survived by one daugh­ter, Paula Simms of South Bend, IN; one granddaughter, Reneta Elston and husband, Curt, of La Porte, IN; one grandson, Bill Simms of Campbell; one great­grandson, Christopher Elston of La Porte; two step-sons, Gerald Bevill of Poplar Bluff, MO,  and Jon (Jack) Bevill of Campbell; six step-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Joanne Thompson Cox

Joanne Thompson Cox, 72, of Scottsdale, AZ, died Monday, January 2, 2006, in Scottsdale.
 
She was born on January 20, 1933, in Forrest City, AR, the daughter of the late Elliott "Bill" and Willie Mae Griffin Thompson.
 
She was united in marriage to Jimmy Mack Cox on August 12, 1951. They enjoyed 42 years together. He preceded her in death on May 19, 1994.
 
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Searcy, AR.
 
She is survived by two daugh­ters, Cynthia Ann Smith and Sa­rah Lynn Carpenter; two sons, Richard Mack Cox and James Steven Cox; five grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Olive Pollock Cox

Olive Pollock Cox, 72, of Dearborn Heights, MI, died Saturday, August 10, 2002, in the Heartland Heights Care Center in Dearborn Heights.
 
She was born March 24, 1930, in Pollard, the daughter of the late Thomas and Aidella Mayo Pol­lock.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Burl Cox on November 3, 2000; one son; three sis­ters, Mary, Bertha and Margie: and one brother Jim.
 
She is survived by one son, Johnny and wife, Cheryl, of Little Rock; one grandson, Anthony; one granddaughter, Angela; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Breanna; nine nieces and neph­ews; and a host of other friends and relatives.
 
Burial in Piggott Cemetery, Piggott, AR.
