Helen Lorene Smart Cummings

Helen Lorene Cummings was born on a farm south of Greenway on July 27, 1909. She departed this life on Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at the age of 93 in the Piggott Community Hospital. Mrs. Cummings parents were William Henry Smart and Catherine Elizabeth Turner Smart who preceded her in death. Her siblings: Willie, Charles, Ray, Lena and Kathleen also preceded her.

Mrs. Cummings taught school in several communities around Greenway and Rector, riding horseback to some of her assigned schools. She also boarded with families in some communities during the week, coming home only on weekends. She attended Arkansas State College in summers, finishing her degree almost thirty years later at McKendree College in Illinois. In 1930 she was married to Elbert Cummings, who was also of Greenway. They lived in Greenway, St. Francis and Brighton, IL, before retiring to Piggott. She was residing in Campbell, MO, at the time of her death.

Mrs. Cummings was a member of Hopewell General Baptist Church in Greenway where her father was a founder. She was also a member of the National Education Association. Mrs. Cummings particularly loved her years of teaching at St. Francis, where her students remember her to this day as an outstanding competitor on the baseball diamond at recess.

Mrs. Cummings is survived by three nieces, Cathy Williams of Fort Smith; Carol Valentino of Hartford, CT, and Pam Mann of O'Fallon, MO; two nephews, Tommy Smart of Piggott and Bill Smart of Hartford, CT, and several grand nieces and nephews.

"Tort" is remembered by her family as a talented cook, a proud and staunch Democrat, a Cardinal baseball fan, and a fun loving prankster. Even as her hearing and vision faded, she managed to stay current on events in Washington, D.C., and she could always tell you the latest baseball score from St. Louis. Mrs. Cummings was loyal to her family and loved them unconditionally. She will be missed by her family and her special friends.
