Burness Osborn Dalton

Piggott businessman Burness Osburn Dalton, 91, died Tuesday, December 5, 2000, in Piggott.
 
A son of William Franklin and Ollie Osburn Dalton, he was born on May 13, 1909, in St. Francis. He attended high school in Campbell, MO.
 
He married Julia Frances Fain on August 31, 1935, in Piggott. To this union three sons were born:  Burness Weldon, Elton Osburn and Gary Thomas.
 
Mr. Dalton served as Clay County sheriff and collector from 1947 to 1950, deputy tax asses­sor, and county and probate clerk from 1939 to 1942.
 
He was appointed as a United States marshal and participated in the Crisis at Central High in Little Rock in 1957.
 
In 1951 he built the Dalton Motel on the east side of Piggott and operated it until 1997.
 
He was also a tax consultant for many years.
 
Mr. Dalton was a member of the First United Methodist church in Piggott and was an active mem­ber until he lost his eyesight. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. He received his 50-year Masonic pin in 1985.
 
He was preceded in death by eight brothers and one sister: Hershel Dalton, Harry Dalton, Paul Dalton, Robert Dalton, Tho­mas Dalton, Millard Dalton, in­fant Elton Dalton and infant twins, Carl and Carlene Dalton.
 
He is survived by his wife, Julia; three sons and their wives, B.W. (Robin) Dalton, Elton (Eleanor) Dalton and Gary (Helene) Dalton; six grandchildren: Stephen Dalton, Fain Dalton, Charles Dalton, Kyle Dalton, Beth Dalton Craig and Jennifer Dalton; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Dalton Palmer; and many friends throughout the community.

Julia Frances Fain Dalton

Julia Frances Fain Dalton, 87, of Piggott died Friday, March 5, 2004, in Kennett, MO.
 
She was born October 30, 1916, in Walnut Ridge, AR, the daughter of the late Rev. Charles R. and Etta Jane "Nain" Hurn Fain.
 
She was a small child when her mother died in 1920. In 1924 she moved to Boynton Beach, FL, to live with her sister and brother-­in-law, Truly and Dr. Nathaniel Weems. She lived with them from 1924 until 1933. Before her junior year in high school, she moved to St. Francis, where her father (who was a long time Methodist minister in Northeast Arkansas} and step-mother lived. She gradu­ated from high school in Campbell, MO,  in 1935.
 
On August 31, 1935, she married Burness O. Dalton in Piggott, to this union three sons were born.
 
Her husband served several years in the 1940's as Clay County Clerk and Sheriff and Collector; and he was a United States Mar­shal in the 1950's. While he was sheriff she served as his assis­tant. In 1951 they built the Dalton Motel on the east side of Piggott, which they operated until 1997.
 
She was a life-long Methodist and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Piggott for over 65 years.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, B.O. Dalton on December 5, 2000; three brothers, John Fain, Dr. Roger Fain and Russell Fain; and one sister, Truly Weems.
 
She is survived by three sons and their wives, B.W. Dalton and wife, Robin, of Calhoun, GA, Corky Dalton and wife, Eleanor, of Kennett and Gary and wife, Helene, of Germantown, TN; six grandchildren, Steve Dalton, Fain Dalton and Charles Dalton, all of NC, and their mother, Amanda Dalton Lane of Chero­kee Village, Dr. Kyle Dalton of Conway, Beth Dalton Craig of Kennett and Jennifer Dalton of TN; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Holder of Southgate, MI; two sisters-in­-law, Mary Dalton Palmer of Piggott and Edythe Fain of Lake Worth, FL; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
 
Burial in the Piggott Cemetery in Piggott.

Valerie V. Vaughn Dalton

Valerie V. Dalton, 96, of Piggott, AR,  died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at her home.
 
She was born March 29, 1905, in Columbus, KY, the daughter of the late James Carl and Jerleen Ida Lockridge Vaughn.
 
She married Herschell F. Dalton on October 10, 1925. To this union four children were born.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschell, two brothers, two sisters, two half brothers, one half sister, one niece and four nephews.
 
She is survived by two sons, James Franklin Dalton of Melvindale, MI, and Kenneth Ray Dalton of Carleton, MI; two daughters, Maxine Tanner of Piggott and Eva Mae Winningham of Melvindale, MI; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many other rela­tives and friends.
 
Burial in Piggott Cemetery.
