James Bracken

James Bracken, 75, of Piggott, a native of Rector, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Twin Rivers Medical Center in Kennett, MO.
 
Mr. Bracken was born July 30, 1923, in Rector to the late Marion and Elizabeth Bracken.
 
He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ellazene Bracken; three brothers, V.W.,  Ferd and Willard Bracken, and a sister, Barbara Lindsey.
 
He was a Baptist and had worked as a truck driver.
 
Survivors include two sons, James Allen Bracken and Melvin Eugene Bracken, both of St. Louis, MO; a daughter, Linda Kay Cooper of Conroe, TX; a brother, Marion Merle Bracken of Rector, five grand­children and five great-grandchildren.

Narine Neeley Bradberry

Narine Bradberry, 83, of McDougal, AR, died Thursday, August 15, 2002, in the Piggott Nursing Center.
 
She was born October 6, 1918; in Boydsville, AR,  the daughter of the late Grover and Lula Harris Neeley. She was united in mar­riage to George Edmond Bradberry on May 10, 1935, and to this union three children were born.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmond, in 1987; one daughter, Joyce; one son, EJ. Bradberry; and three sisters.
 
She is survived by one son, Roger Bradberry and wife, Earlene, of Piggott; two grand­daughters, Karen Taylor and hus­band, Billy, of Birmingham, and
Audra Haines of Harpswell, ME; three great-granddaugh­ters, Brittany Overbey, Ally Tay­lor and Lauren Haines; two broth­ers, Earl Neeley and wife Pete, and Doyne Neeley and wife June, all of McDougal; two sisters, Jean Sutfin of McDougal and Mary Conyers of Rector; and a host of other relatives and friends.
 
Burial in Mars Hill Cemetery, Clay County, AR.

Eva Norene Brawner Braden

Eva Norene Braden, 81, of Pol­lard died Saturday, June 17,2006, at the Piggott Community Hos­pital.
 
She was born April 21, 1925, in Pollard, the daughter of the late John Henry and Florence Crocker Brawner.
 
She was united in marriage to Nolan Braden on May 2, 1942. They had three children.
 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
 
She is survived by her hus­band, John Braden of Pollard; two daughters, Joan Davis of Kennett, MO,  and Jean Ann Hooten of Pollard; one son, David Braden and wife, Vicki, of Pollard; eight grandchildren, Jeff, Cindy, Billy, Matt, Carrisa, Rick, Jennifer and Tim; 12 great-grand­children; one brother, Elmer Brawner of Springdale; and other relatives and friends.

Raymond W. Braman

Raymond W. Braman, 82, of Sulphur Springs, TX, formerly of Rector, died Monday, August 11, 2003, at Hopkins County Memo­rial Hospital in Sulphur Springs.

 

He was born May 18, 1921, in Clay County, the son of the late Ernest and Pearl Kitchen Braman.

 

He married Christine Poppe on July 6,1942.

 

He was a WWII Army staff sergeant and had worked as a Pepsi Cola vending service manager. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs.

 

At age 12, he left school to be the provider for his mother and her seven children after his father was killed by lightning. Thirty years later, he finished high school and junior college, but his greatest accomplishment was be­ing a Christian husband, father and grandfather.

 

He was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Braman, and four sisters, Wilma Jean Coombs, Syble Grooms, Dora Lee Abbott and Euldean Braman.

 

He is survived by his wife Christine; one son and daughter-­in-law, Barry and Paula Braman of Hurst, TX; one grandson and his wife, Shelby and Becky Braman of Kilgore, TX; a granddaughter, Heather Braman, a student at College Station, TX; and two sisters, Cora De Bore of Modesto, CA, and Ernestine Braman.

Frances Johnson Arends Brannan

 

Frances Arends Brannan, 92, of Columbia, MO, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Bluff Nursing Home in Columbia.
 
She was born November 30, 1912, in Malden, MO, the daughter of tile late Elwood D. Johnson and Ima Moore Johnson.
 
She was married to Joseph N. Arends II, he preceded her in death on November 25, 1965. Her sec­ond husband was Dr. Lloyd Brannan, he also preceded her in death.
 
Mrs. Brannan was a retired pi­ano teacher. She attended South­east Missouri Teachers College, the University of Missouri at Co­lumbia and the University of Colo­rado in Boulder, CO. She was a member of the First United Meth­odist Church in Jonesboro and also served as the church organ­ist for the First United Methodist Church in Malden for over 40 years.
 
She was a member of the United Methodist Women's Club, the Adene Keller Music Club, the DEREIGN Club and the Treble Clef Club.
 
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Roselynn Hobbs and Margaret Sparks.
 
She is survived by two sons, John Warren Arends and wife, Martha, of Jonesboro and Joseph Nick Arends and wife, Ruth Ann, of Columbia, MO; three grand­children, Rowe Arends and wife, Becki, of Holts Summit, MO, Cap­tain Patrick Ryan Arends and wife, Susan, of Germany and Kristi Dawn Arends of Seattle, WA;  two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Arends and Caden Arends; one step-daughter, Judy Branna Graves of Little Rock; and two step-granddaughters, Julie and Allison.

Robert H. Breeden

Robert H. Breeden, 97, of Russellville, AR, who co-owned the. Piggott Times for 20 years with Ron and Nancy Kemp, died Sat­urday, March 25, 2006, at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Cen­ter in Russellville.
 
In addition to the Clay County Democrat, Breeden and the Kemps also owned the Clay County Democrat in Rector, AR, the Northeast Arkansas Town Crier in Manila, AR, the Campbell (MO) Citizen and the Dunklin County Press in Senath, MO.
 
Breeden and the Kemps first became acquainted when Breeden co-owned the Russellville Courier-Democrat, where the Kemps were em­ployed. During that period, Breeden also owned newspapers in Paris, Charleston and Green­wood.
 
Breeden started his newspaper career in 1931 as editor and co-­publisher of the Cleveland (OK) American. He remained there until 1962. He also served as a director of the Oklahoma Press Association.
 
As a Republican, he was the minority leader of the Oklahoma Senate for two terms, represent­ing Pawnee and Noble counties. He was active in Oklahoma poli­tics and helped manage Henry Bellmon's successful campaign as the first Republican governor in the state.
 
In 1963 he resigned from the State Senate and moved to Vinita, OK, as the director of the Grand River Dam Authority. He served as director of the Okla­homa Industrial Development and Parks Department from 1965 until 1969. He was director for Oklahoma's Office of Housing and Urban Development until his retirement in 1977.
 
Following his retirement, he moved to Russellville. He owned newspapers in OK and AR for 66 years.
 
Breeden was an avid Oklahoma Sooner football fan and rarely missed a home game. He at­tended all homes games last fall at the age of 97.
 
He was born to the late Roscoe and Zula Hancock Breeden on May 20, 1908, Vicksburg, MS. The family moved to a farm in Haskell, OK,  in 1909. He was a 1924 graduate of Valiant (OK) High School and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 1929.
 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Martha Miller Breeden; a brother, J.W. "Bill" Breeden and an infant son, Bra­dley Donald Breeden.
 
He is survived by daughters Carolyn McLellan of Russellville and Nancy Vaughn of Bethesda, MD, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Betty Ledbetter Gatewood Brewer

Betty Brewer, 90, of Corning, AR,  died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Mark Twain Caring Center in Pop­lar Bluff, MO.
 
She was born September 7, 1910, in Ash Hill, MO, the daughter of the late Harvel and Annie Jackson Ledbetter.
 
She married Ollie Bartley "Bart" Gatewood on November 4, 1925. To this union three sons and one daugh­ter were born. All preceded her in death.
 
She married Leon Duraphy Brewer on December 26, 1933. To this union six children were born. He preceded her in death on April 5, 1996. She was also preceded in death by two of their children.
 
She was a homemaker and was a charter member of the First General Baptist Church in Corning. She accepted Christ at an early age.
 
She is survived by two sons, Burley Brewer of Lakewood, IL, and Herschel Brewer of Marion, AR; two daughters, Glenda Sollis of Poplar Bluff, MO, and Betty Hartsfield of Piggott; one sister, Marylou Gilliam of Belgrade, MO; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grand­children; and 10 great-great­grandchildren.

Richard "Rick" Bricker

 

Richard "Rick" Bricker, Sr., 55, of Piggott, formerly of Alton, IL, died after long illness, Monday, December 25, 2006, at the St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro, AR.

 

Rick joined the Army as a vol­unteer on October 30, 1969 when he was only 17. He was honorably discharged on April 17, 1972 as an E4. He is a Vietnam Veteran and served in the Republic of Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic and repairman from June 15, 1970 to April 17, 1972, which includes hospitalization in conus.

 

Decorations, metals, badges, citations, and campaign ribbons awarded or authorized were an Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal. Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 60, National Defense Service Medal, and One Over­seas Bar, Expert (Rifle M-14).

 

Military education included USA Aviation School, and Air­craft Maintenance Apprentice Course.

 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Graham, ma­ternal grandparents, Carl and Ethel "Mom" Bricker, son, Steven, brothers, "Crutch", "Sonny", David and Gale, sisters, Helen, Doris, and Tina.

 

Rick leaves behind his wife, Linda Williams Bricker of the home; daughters, Shelly Allman and husband, Bryan, Kylee Bricker and fiancee, Corey Camp; son, Billy Wright and wife Tanya; four grandchildren, Alicia Allman, Kelsey Allman, Logan Allman, and two month old Lendsi (Bricker) Camp, all of Piggott.

 

Out of state survivors include sons, Rick Jr., Travis, Aaron, Nicholas and Ronnie; daughters, Tina and Angela; brothers, Donald, Leon, Carl, Jamie, and Jackie; sisters, "Peaches" and Margarette. He touched the lives of innumerable other relatives and friends.

 

Burial in the Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway, AR, with full military honors.

Rachel Pollard Bridges

 

Rachel Bridges, 87, of Pollard, AR,  died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro, AR.
 
She was born December 20, 1915, in Greenbrier, MO, the daughter of the late Fred and Lou Ellen Bostic Pollard.
 
She was united in marriage to James R. Bridges. He preceded her in death.
 
She was also preceded in death by three sons, Charles James, Bob James and Jimmy Bridges; three sisters, Alfee Harper, Imola Kelsey and Jewel Floyd.
 
She is survived by two sisters, Avis Atherton of St. Louis, MO  and Ollie Teachner of Granite City, IL; one brother, Fred Pollard of Pop­lar Bluff; 15 grandchildren, Perry Bammerlin, Rita Ollis, Betty Conyers, Larry James, Charles James, Traci Blascoe, Mary Jane Gormen, Rachel Laviolette, Bar­bara Jacob-Pavi, Jeff James, Will­iam James, Bobby James, Kevin James, Dennis James, and a very special grandson, Ted Conyers; and many great-grandchildren, friends, and relatives.

Warren Gene Broughton

Warren Gene Broughton, 73, of Corning, AR, died Saturday, July 6,  2002, in Corning.
 
He was born in Leachville, AR, the son of the late W.H. and Sarah Luella Moye Broughton. He was united in marriage to Margaret Helen Holloway May 1, 1950. To this union six children were born.
 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 1969; one son, Donnie Broughton, in 1998; and two sisters, Ivy Bums and Ada Broughton.
 
He served in the Army during World War II.
 
He is survived by three sons, Michael Broughton and wife, Tamara, of Loves Park, IL, Billy Broughton and wife, Patricia, of Rockford, IL, and Bobby Broughton and wife, Kathy, of Loves Park; two daughters, Sandra Blascoe of Piggott and Vickie Fox and husband, Kevin, of Loves Park; 15 grandchildren, Terrina Williams, Dawna Jones and husband Shannon, Julie Bauschlicher and husband Steve, Steven Blascoe and wife Traci, Kevin Blascoe and wife Jenny, Jeremy Blascoe, Phillip Blascoe, Tim Blascoe, Joseph Blascoe, Amanda Blascoe, Ricky Broughton and wife Liz, Beth Bachman, Brian Broughton, Nicole Fox and Kortney Fox; 12 great-grandchildren, Kyle Will­iams, Meagan Anderson, Nicolas Fox, Jordan Blascoe, Danielle Bauschlicher, Beau Bauschlicher, Heather Blascoe, Cody Blascoe, Aaron Bachman Jr., Brittney Bachman, Brooke Bachman and Jordan Broughton; a very special companion, Pearl Price, of Corning; five brothers, Ezra Broughton and Lester Broughton, both of Jonesboro, Charles Broughton and James Broughton, both of St. Louis, and Bob Broughton of Walnut Ridge, AR,  and a host of other relatives and friends.
